Baby Crib Bumper Are They Safe
Is it Safe to Use a Baby Crib Bumper Pad?
The baby crib bumper pad became popular during the yesteryears to prevent the baby’s head from slipping in between the slats of the old cribs. And now that there are federal safety standards on baby cribs, there are movements advocating that parents should not use baby crib bumper pads anymore because they pose a potential risk to babies.
Several infant safety organizations and health agencies contend that since modern cribs are built according to safety regulations, the need for the baby crib bumper pad no longer exists. They also opine that baby crib bumper pads are extremely dangerous and can threaten the baby’s safety; therefore, parents can do away with baby crib bumper pads completely. These groups recommend that the safest setting for the baby is a crib without the baby crib bumper pad.
The main objection against the use of baby cribn bumper pads is that they can threaten to suffocate. This is true particularly when the baby grows a little older and starts learning to roll over inside the crib. It is feared that should the turning baby hit the baby crib bumper pad, its softness could smother the infant and restrict breathing. This risk is similar to that presented by a thick pillow or blanket inside the crib. The risk increases with the child’s growing mobility.
Very young babies who are unable to move themselves are the most threatened by the possibility of suffocation. Do remember that at their age, they do not have the physical ability nor have they developed reflexes to move away from potential hazards that they are not even aware of. As such, it is up to the parents and care-giving adults to keep them safe and free from any and all potential dangers.
Considering that the movement against the use of baby crib bumper pads is growing and that even the government regulating agencies have raised the hazard flag on soft bedding, the safer alternative may be to remove the bumper pads on your baby’s crib and not use it at all. Apparently, the safest for your baby is a crib that has nothing in it except for the mattress.
Yet, there remains the concern of some parents about the possibility of infants putting their arms or legs through the slats in which case, they still find baby crib bumper pads necessary. These parents may just be happy to know that there is a new and safer alternative to the traditional baby crib bumper pads. Made of mesh material, the new product is also installed at the sides of the crib to keep all your baby’s body parts inside and yet allows more air to flow through.
